The overwhelming and stressful nature of life leaves many of us searching for the ultimate moment of peace. While a spa day might be just what you need, it’s not the most accessible for an everyday occasion.

Aromatherapy is an amazing way to bring those spa feelings straight to your home. While most of us know of aromatherapy, we might not know what aromatherapy actually means.

We’ve gathered everything you need to know about aromatherapy (plus, some unexpected ways you can bring it into your space). Scent is powerful — your home smelling good can completely transform your mood.

So, Tell Me About Aromatherapy

The power of aromatherapy is what inspired us to create such amazing scents for our Safely Cleaning products. Let us explain the magic.

Aromatherapy stems from holistic medicine, utilizing plants to improve your health and wellbeing. For example, many massage therapists will use essential oils in their practices, affecting their client’s emotional and physical health in a positive way.

Essential oils commonly used in aromatherapy are typically extracted from plants, then distilled and applied directly to your skin through lotions or bath salts. The scents of aromatherapy don’t just smell good, they have the potential to improve your mood.

So, how does this actually work?

We are about to get a little sciencey, so you may want to take notes. Aromatherapy stimulates receptors in your nose that are responsible for the smell. From here, these receptors send messages by olfactory cells to the part of the brain where our emotions, sexual behavior, and memories are processed (AKA the limbic system).

Odor also affects our mood by triggering a feeling associated with a certain scent. Odor is easily linked to past events, reminding us of our feelings from that past event. For example, you may have smelled basil for the first time visiting your grandma’s garden, linking the smell of basil to a familiar and happy feeling. Now, basil may be one of your favorite smells, as it elicits a positive mood and emotion.

This can go two ways. Your horrible 2nd-grade teacher may have worn a vanilla-scented perfume to class every day as she passed your C- report card. We would guess vanilla isn’t your favorite smell.

No other sensory system has an intimate connection with your emotions and associative learning, meaning fragrance can have a massive impact on your mood.

Aromatherapy scents have the ability to cause powerful mood changes. The same logic that makes you light a scented candle to “set the mood” applies to aromatherapy. Aromatherapy benefits include

  • Helping you chill out and de-stress
  • Helping you catch more Zzz’s
  • Improving your quality of life by having the potential to ease pain

Now that you know how powerful smells can be, it’s time to give your space a scent makeover.

How to Make Your House Smell Good:

While candles and air fresheners may be a temporary solution to any funky smell, you will never get to the root of the smell without getting your hands dirty.

While you may not have thought about this before, having cleaning products that smell amazing can make a huge difference in your cleaning experience. Did you know that cleaning can actually be close to therapeutic?

The act of cleaning (especially with great smelling cleaning products) can do wonders for your self-care, not only allowing you to feel a sense of control and accomplishment but also helping you take your mind off life’s daily stressors.

Plus, there is no better feeling than walking into a freshly cleaned room that transports you into total relaxation.

Top notes of orange flower, middle notes of violet, jasmine, and geranium, and base notes of dry woods and bois de gaiac. Smells bright, lightly floral (but not powdery!), and like those overpriced candles you all love.

Spring

Top notes of geranium, orris, and rose, middle notes of jasmine, violet, heliotrope, and base notes of musk, amber, sandalwood, and patchouli. Smells like you air-dried your clothes on a warm, breezy day in a field of tall wildflowers.
